What is KPV?

KPV is a tripeptide of lysine, proline and valine. It forms the last three amino acids of α-MSH and is considered the section partly responsible for its inflammation-modulating properties.

Unlike the complete hormone, KPV is not currently thought to act via the melanocortin receptors of pigment cells, so it has no influence on melanin formation.

KPV in research

In cell and animal models, KPV is studied in connection with inflammatory signalling pathways, such as the activation of NF-κB.

One focus is on models of the intestinal epithelium: KPV can be taken up into cells via the peptide transporter PepT1. Dermatological models are also considered.
